Converting HEIC to JPG adds another round of lossy compression. If you plan to edit and re-save a photo many times in Photoshop, Paint or a video editor, it's safer to keep intermediate files as lossless PNG. PNG never loses more quality no matter how many times you re-save it. For images with lots of text and lines, like screenshots or document photos saved as HEIC on an iPhone, PNG is also cleaner than JPG, because it avoids the smudges (ringing) JPG leaves around text edges.
Good to know
- File size grows a lot. A 12-megapixel photo commonly becomes 10–25MB as PNG, several times the HEIC size. For messaging or uploading, HEIC to JPG is better.
- Quality doesn't get better than the original. It simply carries over what was already compressed in the HEIC.
- Transparency: Ordinary photos have no transparent areas, so the background stays the same in PNG. To remove the background, use a background remover after converting.
- Metadata: Saving as PNG removes all EXIF (date taken, location).

How to use
- Pick an output format in the options panel on the right (below on mobile). For JPG, WebP and AVIF you can set the quality, and for JPG you can choose a background color for transparent areas.
- Drag and drop your images or click to select them. Add several at once and they are converted one after another right away.
- If the original contains metadata such as camera model, date taken or GPS location, it is shown below. By default everything is removed; when saving as JPG you can also remove only the location or keep the original data.
- After changing options, click ‘Convert again with new settings’. Download results one by one or all at once as a ZIP.
