Remove Background from Photo
No upload · Runs in your browserHow to use
- Choose ‘Person’ if the subject is a person, or ‘Object / general’ for products, things and animals.
- Drag and drop a photo or click to choose one, and the background is removed automatically. The first time takes a little longer while the AI model downloads.
- Paint over leftover background with the ‘Erase’ brush, and over wrongly erased parts such as hair or arms with the ‘Restore’ brush. Undo with Ctrl+Z.
- If the edges look rough, adjust sharpness, shrink/expand and softness with the edge sliders, and use the ‘Compare’ view to check against the original.
- Choose a background (transparent, white or any color) and a file format, then press ‘Download image without background’.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos sent to a server?
No. Only the background removal AI model and the runtime (ONNX Runtime Web) are downloaded; inference runs in a web worker inside your browser. Your photos and results never leave your device, and you can confirm in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools that no image data is sent.
Why is it slow the first time? How much data does it use?
The first time, it downloads the runtime (about 3MB transferred) and a model. The person model (MODNet) is about 13MB and the object/general model (U²-Netp) about 4.6MB, so about 8–16MB in total. After that, the files cached in your browser are reused and it starts right away. If you're worried about mobile data, run it once on Wi-Fi first.
What's the difference between Person and Object / general mode?
Person mode uses a portrait matting model (MODNet) trained on photos of people, so it keeps fine edges like hair semi-transparent. Object / general mode uses a model (U²-Netp) that finds the most prominent object in the frame, suited to non-human subjects such as products, cups, shoes and animals. If you don't like the result, try the other mode. The results of both models are remembered separately for each photo.
Which photos work well, and which are difficult?
It works best on in-focus photos with a single subject that clearly differs from the background in color and brightness. Photos where the background is similar in color to the subject, transparent objects like glasses or lenses, fine fur or flyaway hair against a busy background, and overlapping people or objects may leave some background behind or erase parts of the subject. In those cases, touch it up yourself with the erase and restore brushes.
Are large photos saved at their original resolution?
For speed, the AI model judges the background on a downscaled copy (about 512px for people, 320px for objects), then smoothly upscales the resulting mask and applies it at the original resolution. To protect memory, however, photos whose long edge exceeds 4,096px (2,560px on phones) are reduced to that size for processing, and a notice appears on screen when this happens.
Can I change the background to white or blue, like an ID photo?
Yes. Choose ‘White’ or ‘Color’ as the background in the save options and that color is laid underneath when saving. JPG doesn't support transparency, so choosing JPG with a transparent background saves it on white. Background color and size requirements for official ID photos vary by agency, so check the requirements first.
