AVIF applies the AV1 video codec to still images and is often smaller than both JPG and WebP at the same quality. That's why some websites and image CDNs now automatically serve AVIF when the browser supports it, and saving such an image gives you an .avif file. Some Android devices and camera apps can also save AVIF.
Why convert to JPG?
Browsers display AVIF from Chrome 85, Firefox 93 and Safari 16.4, but older image viewers, document editors, print shops and government upload forms often don't recognize it. On Windows, it may not open in the default apps without the AV1 extension. JPG opens in all of these places.
What changes when you convert
- Files get bigger. You give up AVIF's high compression efficiency, so a JPG nearly twice as large is common.
- Transparency: AVIF supports an alpha channel. Transparent AVIFs are filled with the background color in JPG; choose PNG if you need transparency.
- HDR and wide color gamut: 10-bit HDR AVIFs are saved as 8-bit sRGB JPG, and bright areas may look different.
Requirement for opening
Opening AVIF is handled by the decoder in the browser you're using for this page. If your browser is older than the versions above, update it. Learn more in AVIF format explained and the image format comparison.
How to use
- Pick an output format in the options panel on the right (below on mobile). For JPG, WebP and AVIF you can set the quality, and for JPG you can choose a background color for transparent areas.
- Drag and drop your images or click to select them. Add several at once and they are converted one after another right away.
- If the original contains metadata such as camera model, date taken or GPS location, it is shown below. By default everything is removed; when saving as JPG you can also remove only the location or keep the original data.
- After changing options, click ‘Convert again with new settings’. Download results one by one or all at once as a ZIP.
